Kolkata’s Art Gallery to Get Major Expansion

Kolkata’s Rabindra Sarobar is set to become a prominent cultural hub with the planned expansion of its art gallery dedicated to Durga idols. The state government has sanctioned ₹75 lakh for the extension of the existing gallery, which will enhance its capacity to preserve and display more of these revered artefacts.

Currently housing 14 Durga idols, the gallery known as ‘Maa Phire Elo,’ located on the southern edge of the Lake premises, will see significant upgrades. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is spearheading this initiative, which aims to introduce space for an additional 12 to 14 Durga idols. The decision to expand the gallery stems from increasing demand from puja organisers who have sought more room for idol preservation over the years. According to officials, the gallery has faced constraints due to space limitations, leading to the removal of some idols each year to accommodate new ones. “The expansion project is driven by the need to better manage and preserve the rich cultural heritage associated with Durga puja,” stated a KMDA spokesperson. The construction will involve setting up a structure similar to the existing one to facilitate the accommodation of additional idols.

The existing art gallery, which was repurposed from an abandoned warehouse in 2012, has become a significant cultural attraction, drawing considerable foot traffic, especially post-puja. The gallery not only serves as a repository for these artistic treasures but also as an educational and cultural landmark. The expansion work is expected to commence shortly and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year. This development reflects the city’s commitment to preserving its traditional festivities and enhancing public engagement with its cultural heritage.
