Kolkata began the week on a bright and optimistic note, as residents woke up to a clear sky, mild breeze, and an evident improvement in air quality. After a period of deteriorating atmospheric conditions and moderate pollution levels, the city’s air showed visible signs of recovery on October 27, 2025.
According to official data sourced from air quality monitoring agencies, the day’s temperature ranged between 24°C and 33.5°C, while humidity remained moderate at 56%. With light winds averaging 13 km/h, pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10 are expected to disperse gradually, easing the discomfort of residents who had been exposed to poor air quality in the past few days.
Environmental experts observed that the improved weather pattern is a temporary yet welcome shift for Kolkata. “Clear skies and consistent wind movement are helping stabilise pollutant levels, but the upcoming days will depend on regional weather fluctuations,” said a senior official from a state environment department.Data recorded a day earlier showed the Air Quality Index (AQI) hovering around 151, falling under the ‘moderate’ category. The concentration of PM2.5 particles reached 75 µg/m³, while PM10 stood at 92 µg/m³ both exceeding the safe limit prescribed by Indian standards. The marginal improvement today indicates that the city is witnessing a gradual transition towards cleaner air, aided by meteorological stability and reduced vehicular emissions during non-peak hours.
However, public health specialists cautioned that those residing in traffic-dense corridors or industrial zones should continue to wear protective masks, particularly individuals with respiratory or cardiac conditions. “Even with marginally better AQI levels, prolonged exposure to urban pollutants can affect sensitive groups,” an environmental health expert noted. The city’s weather has also energised outdoor activity. Mornings have turned pleasant for walkers and cyclists, while evenings are proving ideal for open-air recreation. Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation said that upcoming rainfall later in the week would further help cleanse the atmosphere and settle dust particles.
Forecast models indicate a mixed week ahead. While October 28 is likely to remain sunny, light rainfall is expected to commence on October 29 and continue intermittently through the end of the month. Temperatures are projected to fall to a comfortable 23°C range, providing respite from humid afternoons. As Kolkata progresses towards the festive and winter season, environmental observers emphasise the importance of sustained efforts such as cleaner transportation options, responsible construction practices, and public awareness to ensure that improved air quality becomes a consistent reality, not an occasional relief.
