Kolkata Revamps Demolition Strategy for Illegal Buildings Amid Safety Concerns

KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to intensify its crackdown on illegal buildings across the city, following a directive to resume demolition operations after a hiatus of four months due to the Lok Sabha elections. The renewed effort comes in response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent criticism of a racket involved in hazardous construction practices jeopardizing citizen safety.

An official from the KMC buildings department outlined the strategic overhaul, which includes augmenting the monthly demolition target from 150 to 200 unauthorized structures. A dedicated central squad will oversee and coordinate this initiative, stationed at the headquarters under the leadership of a deputy chief engineer. This team will collaborate closely with borough executive engineers, ensuring swift decision-making and operational efficiency during demolition activities.

“In preparation for the expanded scope, KMC is enhancing its infrastructure with plans to possibly engage additional demolition agencies beyond the current four operating in 144 wards,” stated a senior executive engineer at KMC. The move underscores KMC’s commitment to addressing rampant illegal construction, particularly in identified ‘red zones’ like Cossipore-Dum Dum, Burrabazar, Park Circus, and several other high-risk areas.

Recent incidents, such as the building collapse in Garden Reach, have underscored the urgency to preemptively identify and dismantle illegal structures before they pose a threat to public safety. KMC officials emphasized the critical role of enhanced vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to ensure the effectiveness of their operations.

“Strict oversight and proactive measures are essential to prevent unauthorized constructions from endangering lives,” remarked a senior official from the KMC buildings department. The collaboration with police authorities aims to mitigate past challenges where enforcement efforts were hindered due to logistical gaps.

Moving forward, KMC is committed to maintaining constant vigilance over areas witnessing a surge in illegal constructions, leveraging real-time monitoring and preemptive actions to safeguard urban infrastructure and citizen welfare.

The comprehensive approach signals a robust response to the persistent challenge of illegal buildings in Kolkata, aiming not only to enforce compliance but also to foster a safer urban environment conducive to sustainable development.
