Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port is embarking on a strategic modernisation drive, with a clear objective to drastically reduce the turnaround time for vessels. This ambitious overhaul, announced by a senior port official, is more than just a logistical upgrade; it is a foundational step towards building a zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and economically equitable city. By deploying advanced technology and modernising infrastructure, the port aims to cut costs and improve efficiency, directly contributing to a cleaner environment and a more robust regional economy. This concerted effort positions the port as a key player in the city’s broader journey towards sustainable and inclusive urban development.

The port’s modernisation plan is multi-faceted, with a focus on several key areas. The deployment of eight new mobile harbour cranes and the implementation of night navigation are expected to reduce vessel waiting and handling times, bringing the current average turnaround from five days down to a more efficient four. Furthermore, new floating cranes at Sagar Island will allow larger ships to offload dry bulk cargo in deeper waters, alleviating pressure on the main port channels. These operational improvements are crucial in enhancing the port’s capacity, which is being expanded by an additional 30 million tonnes, and in addressing the ongoing challenges posed by the port’s riverine nature and limited draft availability.

Crucially, the drive for efficiency is intrinsically linked to the zero-net-carbon agenda. A significant reduction in a vessel’s waiting and berthing time means a corresponding decrease in the amount of fuel burned while idle in port. This directly translates to a lower carbon footprint and improved air quality, not just at the docks but also in the surrounding urban areas. Similarly, the development of new lock gates and the Balagarh Project—a new facility upstream to decongest the existing docks—will reduce traffic and pollution both on water and on the city’s roads, as cargo evacuation becomes more streamlined. These initiatives embody a forward-thinking approach that prioritises both economic viability and environmental responsibility, a cornerstone of sustainable urban planning.

The modernisation also has significant implications for social and economic equity. By enhancing the port’s overall efficiency and fostering public-private partnerships through projects like the Waterfront Warehouse under the Sagarmala Project, the port is creating a more stable and reliable logistics ecosystem.
