As regional tensions escalate along the western frontier, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata has scaled up its security protocols in compliance with central directives.
Reinforcing its position as a vital node in India’s maritime trade network.
With the ongoing conflict with Pakistan prompting a national security recalibration, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, along with the Directorate General of Shipping, has raised the port security alert to Level 2. This elevation marks a decisive shift in operational posture, requiring heightened surveillance, enhanced coordination, and immediate readiness to mitigate any emergent risks.
All staff at the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), including contractual personnel, have had their leave cancelled for the period of May 10–14. Employees are mandated to remain stationed at headquarters, even on previously scheduled off days, to maintain full operational capacity. Dock pilots and marine personnel are being kept on standby for any emergency evacuation or incident response operations.
This significant move follows a high-level virtual review meeting chaired by the ministry’s top leadership, joined by key port officials and security commandants. The review underscored the strategic value of Kolkata Port and the importance of safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure amidst a heightened threat environment.Security drills involving all stakeholders, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), port security officers, and marine teams, will now be conducted regularly to ensure preparedness for diverse contingencies. Notably, the port will suspend all operations during planned or unexpected blackouts to mitigate the risk of sabotage or data breaches—underscoring an alignment between physical and cyber security protocols. The port’s cyber defence framework is also undergoing a major upgrade. The Chief Information Security Officer has been tasked with implementing stricter monitoring tools and response systems to guard against cyber intrusions that could compromise port logistics and safety.
Access control measures have been significantly tightened.
Only individuals with valid dock entry permits or verified photo identification will be allowed entry into the port zones, ensuring restricted movement and better tracking. In a statement issued by SMPK leadership, the emphasis was laid on collective vigilance, operational integrity, and the role of each port worker in defending national interests. The port reiterated its commitment to being not only a maritime trade gateway but also a model for secure, sustainable, and smart port operations.Amid growing calls for climate-conscious and resilient urban infrastructure, this comprehensive port security upgrade reflects a broader commitment to safe, sustainable urban logistics. The port’s strategic actions also resonate with the need to balance national preparedness with eco-conscious operational continuity, reinforcing its role in India’s transition to equitable and secure smart cities.
