Kolkata Port Enhances Security Amid Rising Tensions

Kolkata, has heightened its security protocols to Level 2, as directed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

This move underscores the port’s critical role in India’s maritime trade and its commitment to safeguarding national interests. The decision to raise the security alert follows a comprehensive review by the Directorate General of Shipping, which assessed potential vulnerabilities in the current geopolitical climate. The port’s strategic importance, coupled with its recent achievements, necessitates enhanced vigilance to mitigate any emergent risks.

To ensure uninterrupted operations, all personnel at the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), including contractual staff, have had their leave cancelled for the period of May 10–14. Employees are required to remain stationed at their posts, even on previously scheduled off days, to maintain full operational capacity. Dock pilots and marine personnel are on standby for any emergency evacuation or incident response operations. This proactive approach aligns with the port’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and capacity. In the fiscal year 2023–24, SMP Kolkata achieved a record cargo handling of 66.4 million metric tonnes (MMT), marking a 1.11% increase from the previous year. The port’s net surplus also saw a significant rise, reaching Rs 501.73 crore, a 65% growth over the previous year.

Looking ahead, SMP Kolkata plans to invest Rs 4,000 crore by 2030 to expand its cargo handling capacity to 130 MMT. This expansion includes the development of new facilities and the modernization of existing infrastructure, with a focus on sustainability and efficiency. Notably, the port has acquired a 300-acre outgate dock facility in Balagarh, Hooghly district, which will help reduce congestion and pollution in the city. The port’s commitment to enhancing security measures and expanding capacity reflects its dedication to supporting India’s economic growth while ensuring the safety and resilience of its maritime infrastructure. As regional tensions continue to evolve, SMP Kolkata remains vigilant and prepared to adapt to emerging challenges, reinforcing its position as a vital node in India’s maritime trade network.
