Kolkata: In a dramatic turn of events reminiscent of a Hollywood action scene, Traffic Sergeant Ashok Kumar Mistri of Thakurpukur Traffic Guard displayed exceptional bravery and quick thinking as he apprehended a snatcher following a daring 10-minute bike chase on Thursday morning.
Police official who typically pilots VIP convoys, sprung into action after receiving reports of a robbery involving two assailants who had snatched valuables and house keys from a morning walker in Thakurpukur. The incident unfolded around 7 am near the bustling Pora Asthwathala-James Long Sarani crossing, close to Thakurpukur Market. The victim, a 50-year-old woman on her routine morning walk, was targeted by the snatchers on a motorcycle. Swiftly grabbing her bag, the culprits fled through a bylane onto DH Road towards Taratala.
Police official, patrolling DH Road at the time, noticed a speeding black motorcycle with no helmet-wearing riders. He immediately alerted his colleagues via walkie-talkie, prompting Constable Aftabuddin and Home Guard Niranjan Saha to intercept the motorcycle near Behala Metro station. Despite initial compliance, the driver attempted to flee, prompting Constable Ramprasad Bera to apprehend the pillion rider. Arriving swiftly at the scene, Sergeant Mistri identified the rider carrying the stolen handbag and coordinated with Thakurpukur Police Station for further action. Within minutes of the robbery, the victim arrived at the station and positively identified both her belongings and the captured suspect.
The apprehended suspect, identified as Mohammad Kaif (22) of Masjidbari Lane and a known offender, confessed to the robbery during initial questioning. Police recovered several items including a smartphone, two SIM cards, spectacles, a purse with Rs 360, and a set of house keys from his possession. This incident underscores the crucial role of law enforcement in responding swiftly to criminal activities, ensuring public safety, and apprehending perpetrators promptly.
