The state government has unveiled plans for a 25-acre entertainment, technology, and creativity hub in New Town, Kolkata.
Dubbed ‘Biswa Angan’ in Bengali, the International Information Technology and Entertainment Park (IITEC) aims to transform the township into a premier destination for cultural and recreational activities. The proposed site, located near Eco Park, will be developed by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Officials anticipate that the new facility will mirror the success of the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, also situated in New Town, by attracting major concerts and events.
The state government’s broader strategy includes the establishment of a third convention centre in Siliguri, complementing existing facilities in New Town and Digha. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to enhancing the state’s infrastructure and cultural offerings. In addition to cultural developments, the government has announced ten new investment proposals in steel and other industries, amounting to Rs 25,000 crore. Land allocations totaling 2,515 acres have been made in regions such as Raghunathpur, Durgapur, and Panagarh to facilitate these industrial projects. The anticipated outcome is the creation of approximately 70,000 employment opportunities, signaling a robust push towards industrial growth.
Furthering its commitment to inclusive development, the state plans to establish shopping malls in all 23 district headquarters. Each facility will be constructed on a one-acre plot, with two floors dedicated to products made by self-help groups (SHGs). This move aims to provide SHGs with a permanent retail space, promoting local artisans and entrepreneurs. The government’s initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to urban development, integrating cultural, technological, and industrial advancements. By fostering an environment conducive to creativity and innovation, West Bengal positions itself as a forward-thinking state committed to sustainable and inclusive growth.
As the projects progress, stakeholders and citizens alike will be observing the implementation and impact of these developments on the state’s socio-economic fabric. The success of Biswa Angan and associated initiatives could serve as a model for similar endeavors across the country.
