Kolkata Thunderstorm Brings Respite to Kolkata’s Sweltering Summer Heat

Kolkata experienced a significant weather event as a Nor’wester, locally known as Kalbaisakhi, swept through the city around 9:30 PM. This sudden thunderstorm brought a much-needed respite from the intense heatwave that had gripped the city in recent days.

The storm was accompanied by gusty winds and a steady drizzle that intensified into a heavy downpour. According to private weather forecasting services, the temperature in the city dropped by 5°C to 6°C following the storm. This marked a significant relief, especially after the mercury had soared to 38.2°C earlier in the week, the highest recorded so far this year. The Regional Meteorological Centre attributed the change in weather to a shift in wind patterns. An alteration in both upper and lower air circulations created favourable conditions for convective activity. Moisture from the Bay of Bengal, coupled with local heating, led to the formation of the thunderstorm.

Looking ahead, the Met office predicts that Kolkata and its surrounding districts will continue to experience successive thunderstorms until April 30. While these thunderstorms may not be of equal intensity, they are expected to lower the mercury by three to five degrees over the next few days. The western districts, including Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, and West Burdwan, are likely to experience more severe storms and a quicker temperature drop. In Kolkata, the temperature is expected to decrease gradually, with the maximum temperature potentially falling to 31°C by Tuesday. The minimum temperature is also anticipated to drop correspondingly.

This series of thunderstorms marks a significant shift in the city’s weather pattern, providing much-needed relief to residents who have been enduring the scorching heat. As the Nor’wester continues its course, it not only cools the city but also brings hope for a more temperate and comfortable climate in the coming days.
