Kolkata Metro Reports Record Smart Ticketing Growth As Aamar Kolkata Metro App Booms

Kolkata Metro is witnessing a sharp rise in digital ticketing as its official mobile application, Aamar Kolkata Metro, gains significant traction among commuters. The surge in adoption follows the full opening of the Green Line stretch, which has not only boosted passenger numbers but also accelerated the shift towards mobile QR code-based ticketing.

According to officials, key transit points such as Howrah, Sealdah, Salt Lake Sector V, Dum Dum, and Esplanade have emerged as the most active hubs for app-based ticketing. Since the extension of new routes, between 21,000 and 24,000 passengers have been opting for mobile QR tickets every day, a figure that demonstrates the growing appetite for digital-first travel solutions in the city. To assist commuters in embracing the system, 72 volunteers from the Bharat Scouts and Guides of Eastern Railway have been deployed at strategic stations. Their role has been to guide passengers through app installation on both Android and iOS platforms, alongside demonstrating the ticket booking process. The initiative has not only improved commuter experience but has also helped reduce queues at ticket counters.

Metro authorities have further incentivised adoption by offering a five per cent discount on fares for passengers booking tickets through the app before arriving at stations. Officials underline that the digital transition is central to easing congestion across stations and improving efficiency within the country’s oldest metro network. Since August 25, Kolkata Metro has made both paper QR and mobile QR tickets available across its entire network. Initially rolled out only on the Green, Blue, and Orange Lines, the facility now extends to the Purple and Yellow Lines as well. This expansion is expected to standardise digital ticketing and ensure seamless travel for passengers across all corridors.

The Metro spokesperson emphasised that digital ticketing marks a crucial step towards making Kolkata Metro more sustainable, efficient, and commuter-friendly. By encouraging passengers to shift from physical tokens to QR-based systems, authorities are aiming to reduce the use of paper, enhance operational efficiency, and make the system more eco-friendly. The expansion of digital ticketing coincides with the inauguration of multiple new stretches across Green, Yellow, and Orange Lines, marking a phase of rapid growth for the Kolkata Metro network. Officials believe that the adoption of app-based ticketing not only modernises urban mobility but also strengthens Kolkata’s position as a leader in sustainable mass transit solutions.
