Kolkata Metro Progress RVNL Nears Completion of Second Pier Prepares for Handover

Kolkata’s metro expansion project, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has achieved a major milestone with the completion of the second metro pier at the Chingrighata crossing.

With construction work concluded, RVNL is poised to hand over the site back to normal traffic flow this week, marking a significant step forward in the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor project. The newly constructed pier at Chingrighata, pivotal for the metro line’s extension, underscores RVNL’s commitment to progress amidst logistical challenges and regulatory requirements. The completion of this critical infrastructure element sets the stage for Kolkata Police’s traffic trials, facilitating the transition to the next phase of the project.
At the heart of RVNL’s efforts lies the imperative need for the Metropolitan site, crucial for bridging a critical gap in the metro line’s extension beyond Ruby. Despite concerted efforts, the Commissioner of Railway Safety’s (CRS) inspection underscored the need for additional infrastructure, including the construction of viaducts and portal piers, to secure regulatory approval for commercial operations. Kolkata Police’s traffic department plays a pivotal role in synchronizing the handover of sites and facilitating seamless traffic transitions. By linking the Metropolitan site with Chingrighata, authorities aim to expedite traffic trials and pave the way for RVNL to advance its construction activities.

The completion of pier 319 at Chingrighata, initiated in February, heralds a temporary traffic re-routing strategy to accommodate construction activities. While the short-term disruptions are inevitable, they signify progress towards enhancing Kolkata’s metro connectivity and addressing long-standing infrastructural deficits. Looking ahead, RVNL remains steadfast in its pursuit of completing pending infrastructure projects, including the critical Metropolitan site, to realize the full potential of Kolkata’s metro expansion. As the city’s infrastructure landscape evolves, collaborative efforts between stakeholders will be pivotal in ensuring timely project delivery and sustainable urban development.
