Kolkata Metro Halts as Rains Expose Urgent Urban Drainage Gaps

Kolkata Metro services were significantly disrupted due to waterlogging on the tracks, caused by heavy overnight and early morning rains. The central and southern sections of the network experienced severe water accumulation, leading to the suspension of services on several routes. The affected sections included the stretch between Girish Park and Maidan stations, covering seven stations in the central part of the city.

Services were truncated, with trains operating only between Kavi Subhash and Maidan in the south, and between Dakshineswar and Girish Park in the north. Efforts were underway to dewater the tracks using pumps to restore normal operations. The waterlogging also impacted surface transportation, with key junctions across the city inundated, causing significant traffic disruptions. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) deployed additional pumps to clear the roads and alleviate the situation.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by urban infrastructure during the monsoon season, emphasizing the need for improved drainage systems and preparedness to handle extreme weather events. As of now, Metro authorities are working diligently to clear the waterlogged sections and resume full services. Commuters are advised to stay updated on service status and plan their travel accordingly.

The KMC continues its efforts to manage the waterlogging situation on the roads, aiming to restore normalcy as soon as possible. This disruption serves as a reminder of the importance of robust urban planning and infrastructure resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.
