Kolkata Metro Expands Fleet with Two New Dalian Rakes

Kolkata Metro has bolstered its fleet with the induction of two new Dalian rakes, procured through a global tender.

These state-of-the-art eight-coach trains, manufactured by China’s CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Company, arrived at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port on March 3 and have since been transported to the Noapara car shed for final assembly and testing. The addition of these rakes is part of Kolkata Metro’s ongoing efforts to modernise its services and enhance passenger comfort. The Dalian rakes are equipped with several advanced features, including 100 mm wider doors compared to existing AC rakes, increased seating capacity, improved air conditioning systems, and noise reduction capabilities. Safety enhancements include a disc brake system, controlled-discharge fire extinguishers, and evacuation ramps with anti-skid rubber flooring.

One of the new rakes is scheduled for mandatory inspection soon, after which it will be inducted into service. The second rake is expected to undergo inspection shortly thereafter. Once operational, the fleet of Dalian rakes will increase to seven, contributing to the expansion of services on the North-South corridor, which currently carries the highest passenger load. In addition to the Dalian rakes, Kolkata Metro operates rakes manufactured by Medha and BHEL. The Metro Railway currently operates 31 rakes on the Blue Line, 18 on the Green Line, three on the Orange Line, and two on the Purple Line.

The induction of these new rakes aligns with Kolkata Metro’s commitment to providing efficient, safe, and comfortable transportation options for the city’s residents. As the Metro network continues to expand, the addition of modern rakes will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for public transportation. With the ongoing development of new corridors and the introduction of advanced rakes, Kolkata Metro is poised to enhance its service offerings, contributing to the city’s goal of sustainable urban mobility.
