In response to growing concerns over plastic waste and littering, the Kolkata Metro authorities have embarked on a proactive cleanliness drive, targeting the Green Line, particularly the stretch from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.
Despite the Metro’s commitment to offering efficient and eco-friendly transportation services, disruptive behaviour among certain commuters has tarnished the station’s cleanliness, prompting the implementation of specialised anti-littering initiatives. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, as highlighted by Metro officials. Awareness campaigns play a pivotal role in educating commuters about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and responsible waste disposal practices. These campaigns utilise various channels, including verbal announcements, posters, counselling sessions, awareness videos displayed on platform TVs, and social media platforms, to reach a broad audience and foster a culture of cleanliness.
Moreover, infrastructure improvements are being undertaken to facilitate proper waste management within Metro premises. This includes the installation of litter bins and bottle crusher machines at different stations along the Metro lines, enabling commuters to dispose of waste responsibly and encouraging recycling efforts. The significance of these initiatives is underscored by the increasing ridership observed on the Green Line segment, particularly the ‘Under the River’ stretch. In the final 17 days of the previous fiscal year, the Kolkata Metro transported an impressive 750,000 passengers on this route. Notably, Howrah station recorded the highest number of passengers, followed closely by Howrah Maidan station, highlighting the critical role of these stations within the Metro network. As Kolkata Metro continues its efforts to enhance service quality and environmental sustainability, the success of the anti-littering initiatives will depend on the collective participation of commuters and the ongoing commitment of Metro authorities to enforce cleanliness standards. By fostering a culture of responsibility and stewardship, the Metro aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant commuting experience for all passengers, while also contributing to environmental conservation efforts in the region.
