Kolkata Metro Achieves Record Daily Passenger Count Of 9.82 Lakh Saturday

Kolkata Metro achieved a landmark milestone on Saturday, registering its highest-ever single-day passenger count of 9.82 lakh, surpassing the previous record of 9.61 lakh set last year during Maha Sashti. The unprecedented ridership underscores the metro’s pivotal role in facilitating smooth, efficient movement across the city during the festive season.

Data from the Metro Railway Kolkata reveals that Friday, the day of Maha Chaturthi, also saw a substantial turnout with over 9.32 lakh commuters utilising the network. Together, the two-day ridership on September 26 and 27 reached approximately 18.64 lakh, reflecting the city’s reliance on rapid transit to manage congestion during Durga Puja celebrations. On Maha Panchami, the Blue Line transported over 7.43 lakh passengers, while the Green Line carried 2.21 lakh, demonstrating the balanced distribution of commuter traffic across lines. Officials emphasised that these figures highlight the metro’s crucial function in reducing road congestion and providing an eco-friendly alternative to conventional transport, aligning with the city’s goals for sustainable urban mobility.

Experts note that Kolkata Metro’s capacity to manage such high passenger volumes efficiently is a testament to continuous infrastructural upgrades and operational planning. “The metro system is not just a transit solution; it is an enabler of city-wide mobility, particularly during high-demand periods like Durga Puja, where millions travel to visit pandals and cultural hotspots,” said a senior transport official. The metro’s extensive coverage and frequent train operations have allowed commuters to bypass congested roads while maintaining punctuality and safety standards. Operational strategies, including increased frequency during peak festive days and dedicated staff to manage flow at key stations, have ensured smooth travel experiences for the public.

This record ridership also underscores the metro’s potential to influence urban transport planning and reduce reliance on private vehicles, supporting Kolkata’s vision of zero-emission and sustainable city transport. Officials confirmed that further enhancements, including modern signalling systems and expanded carriages, are planned to accommodate growing demand, particularly during festival seasons. As the city celebrates the cultural vibrancy of Durga Puja, Kolkata Metro continues to exemplify how modern, efficient public transport systems can enhance commuter convenience, foster sustainable mobility, and support equitable access across diverse urban populations.
