Kolkata Forecasts Light Rain, South Bengal in Flood Alert

Kolkata: The meteorological office has forecasted light rain for Kolkata starting Tuesday, with the intensity of precipitation expected to diminish. In contrast, several districts in South Bengal, including Murshidabad, Burdwan, Nadia, and Bankura, are bracing for continued heavy rainfall.

Over the past 48 hours, Kolkata has experienced a significant amount of rainfall. From Sunday to Monday evening, the city recorded a total of 61.8 mm of rain. The heaviest rainfall occurred on Sunday, with the city’s rain tally standing at 54.4 mm by the close of Sunday. On Monday, up to the evening, an additional 7.5 mm of rain was recorded. The rain has also influenced the city’s temperatures, with the maximum temperature dropping to 29.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.4 degrees below the average for this time of year.

Geographically, the distribution of rainfall has been uneven across the city. South Kolkata has seen more significant rainfall compared to northern localities. Despite a 20% seasonal deficit in rainfall, Kolkata has experienced a surplus in August. According to the Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Kolkata, the city has received 253 mm of rainfall from August 1 to 19, surpassing the average expected rainfall of 200.4 mm for the month. The weather outlook suggests that rain will taper off in Kolkata on Tuesday, with a decrease in intensity expected depending on the movement and positioning of the prevailing low-pressure system. The forecast indicates that while Kolkata may witness lighter showers, the southern regions of Bengal will continue to experience substantial rainfall.
