Kolkata Data Centre Boosts AI Innovation

Kolkata is set to become a key player in India’s burgeoning AI-driven tech ecosystem with the launch of a state-of-the-art data centre in New Town, marking a significant milestone for the region’s digital infrastructure.

The facility, built by ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India (STT GDC India), is designed to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence (AI), making it one of the most advanced AI-ready data centres in Eastern India. This 5.59-acre campus is equipped with high-density rack configurations, cutting-edge cooling systems, and a scalable modular design to facilitate the intense computing requirements of AI workloads. The facility’s capabilities go beyond its impressive physical infrastructure. It has earned the highly sought-after TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification, a global standard for data centre reliability. With an IT power capacity of 10 MW, the facility ensures high availability and uptime, essential for the mission-critical applications that will power the AI revolution. The first building in this sprawling campus is designed to deliver 5-6 MW of IT power, supported by an advanced N+2C power architecture and radial N+N configuration for uninterrupted power flow. Such robust power systems ensure that the centre can meet the rising demand for AI computing without any risk of power failure or data loss.
The new data centre’s strategic location in the heart of New Town’s Silicon Valley has been carefully selected to foster collaboration with tech innovators and enterprises across India. Positioned at the crossroads of digital transformation, the centre aims to support diverse AI applications, from regional language models to cutting-edge healthcare and manufacturing solutions. Its high-performance computing power, coupled with low-latency connectivity, will accelerate the development and deployment of AI models, offering immense potential for both startups and large enterprises. In addition to its technological advancements, the Kolkata facility prioritises sustainability, reflecting STT GDC India’s commitment to eco-friendly data infrastructure. The centre boasts a low-PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) cooling design that minimises energy consumption and reduces environmental impact. Advanced water conservation systems, such as closed-loop cooling, rainwater harvesting, and greywater reuse, further reinforce its green credentials. By using low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants, the centre aligns with global sustainability standards, setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible data centres in India.
As AI becomes increasingly central to India’s digital landscape, the launch of this AI-ready data centre represents a crucial step towards meeting the demand for advanced computing infrastructure. The facility is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI research and application, with specific focus on fields such as computer vision, natural language processing, and predictive analytics. Furthermore, it will serve as an essential resource for hyperscale cloud service providers, government organisations, and a host of industries eager to harness the power of AI to drive innovation and efficiency. Scheduled to go live in the second quarter of 2025, this facility is part of STT GDC India’s ambitious plan to expand its footprint across the country. With a total of 30 data centres across 10 cities and a combined IT load capacity of 390 MW, STT GDC India is poised to be at the forefront of India’s data infrastructure revolution. The Kolkata campus is expected to play a vital role in accelerating AI innovation in the region, attracting global tech companies, fostering regional AI startups, and contributing to the growth of the digital economy.
As India continues to evolve as a hub for AI innovation, this new facility underscores the country’s growing focus on building the digital infrastructure necessary to support AI-driven advancements. With its cutting-edge design, commitment to sustainability, and strategic location, the Kolkata data centre is well-positioned to become a key player in the region’s technological and economic growth. This landmark development is not only a win for Kolkata but a crucial step towards India’s vision of becoming a global leader in AI and digital transformation.
