Kolkata Civic Drive Clears 800 Illegal Spots in Citywide Push

Kolkata witnessed an extensive civic drive over two days as the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), in collaboration with Kolkata Police, aggressively cleared approximately 800 illegal hawker spots and encroachments across various city sectors. Initiated on Tuesday and intensified on Wednesday, the operation targeted both pavements and carriageways, employing bulldozers and heavy machinery to dismantle permanent and semi-permanent structures.

According to sources within Lalbazar, the joint KMC-KP teams conducted operations in around 40 different locations, including prominent areas like Canning Street, Park Street, New Market, Behala, Alipore Zoo, and Science City. The crackdown also extended to other congested zones such as New Alipore, Rabindra Sadan area, Bagbazar, Hatibagan, Entally, College Street, and Anandapur.

The drive, reminiscent of the historic “Operation Sunshine” from nearly three decades ago, involved the removal of hawkers’ goods and the dismantling of structures, which were then relocated near police stations. Officials confirmed that 108 hawkers were either served notices or fined, with 23 facing potential legal action, particularly in areas like Gariahat. Expressing dismay, affected hawkers voiced their concerns over losing their livelihoods, highlighting the abrupt impact on their families and daily sustenance. Despite the emotional backlash, authorities affirmed the necessity of reclaiming public spaces from illegal encroachments to ensure pedestrian safety and urban orderliness. Senior officials from both Kolkata Police and KMC headquarters emphasized the continuation of the operation, underscoring their commitment to maintaining clear sidewalks and roads. The drive received mixed reactions from the community, with some residents welcoming the initiative for restoring accessibility, while others criticized the perceived overzealousness of law enforcement. As the city grapples with urban congestion and infrastructural challenges, the coordinated efforts of civic bodies aim to strike a balance between facilitating business activities and preserving public amenities. Moving forward, stakeholders anticipate sustained vigilance and proactive measures to manage urban growth and ensure compliance with civic regulations.
