Kolkata Braces for Patchy Rain, High Humidity Levels

Kolkata is set to experience a week of fluctuating temperatures, patchy rain, and increasing humidity as the city transitions into full monsoon mode. According to some resources, June 14 will begin with a warm and moderately humid day, with temperatures ranging from 28.6°C to 37.4°C. While the morning hours may offer some comfort, the afternoon will bring peak heat, prompting advisories to limit exposure and ensure adequate hydration.

The day will also see scattered showers, particularly in the late afternoon and evening, with an 87% chance of rainfall. With humidity at 60% and winds gusting up to 23.8 km/h, residents may find brief relief from the oppressive temperatures, though discomfort will persist in densely built-up and poorly ventilated areas. Rain will return on June 16 with patchy showers and humidity rising to 65%.

The UV index remains relatively low at 2.2, but sun protection is still advisable for those spending extended periods outdoors. Health experts and urban safety advocates recommend scheduling outdoor exercise or errands during early morning hours and avoiding peak heat between 12 PM and 3 PM. The intermittent rain may provide temporary cooling, but it also increases the risk of slippery roads and traffic slowdowns.

Looking ahead, the seven-day forecast reveals a mixed weather pattern with high humidity and consecutive days of rainfall, breaking from typical early monsoon trends. On June 15, the city will see a brief return of sunny skies, with temperatures climbing to 38.3°C, the highest for the week, and no rainfall expected. However, this dry spell will be short-lived. Daytime highs will dip slightly to 35.5°C, signalling the onset of more stable monsoon conditions.

From June 17 onwards, temperatures will drop further, with daily highs not exceeding 33.8°C for the remainder of the week. June 17 will mark the beginning of consistent moderate rain, a trend that will extend through June 20. Humidity levels are expected to climb as well, reaching 74% by June 18. This combination of rain and high moisture content in the air can strain vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, outdoor workers, and those without access to cooling infrastructure.

City officials are advised to ensure stormwater drainage systems are clear and that temporary shelters and public hydration points remain operational during extended rainfall periods. On a positive note, the rainfall will likely offer respite from heat stress, reduce air pollution levels, and support local greenery and agriculture. However, urban residents must be prepared for daily disruptions, including slippery pavements, delayed transport, and intermittent power supply.
