Kolkata Airport’s T2 to Outshine with 21 Aerobridges

Kolkata Airport is set to enhance its passenger experience with the construction of a new terminal (T2) valued at ₹4,200 crore. Scheduled to feature 21 aerobridges, the new terminal will surpass the existing Terminal 1 (T1), which currently has 18 aerobridges.

This development aims to streamline passenger boarding by reducing the need for bus transfers to remote gates, thereby improving overall efficiency and convenience. The new terminal is designed as a U-shaped structure, offering a more spatially efficient layout compared to the existing terminal. Despite having a floor area that is approximately one-third smaller than T1, at 1.3 million square feet versus 2 million square feet, T2 will optimise space utilisation. The terminal’s layout includes dedicated areas for check-in, security, retail, food and beverage outlets on the departure level, and baggage claim and exits on the ground level. The terminal’s twin arms will extend into the apron area, housing the boarding gates and additional F&B options.

The construction of T2 will commence after the completion of the boundary wall around the old domestic terminal, with demolition expected to start by the end of this year or early next year. The new terminal is projected to be operational by late 2025 or early 2026, following a 48-month construction period. Additionally, the air traffic control tower and related facilities will transition to a new location, with the installation of new navigation and surveillance equipment underway. This transition will involve a phased relocation, ensuring continuous operation of both the old and new terminals until the complete shutdown of the existing complex around October next year. The enhancements are set to significantly bolster the airport’s capacity and service efficiency, aligning with the growing demands of air travel.
