Kochi Water Metro Links Biennale Across City Venues

For the sixth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, organisers have partnered with Kochi Metro Rail Limited to integrate the city’s Water Metro network into the festival experience, transforming ferry rides into curated pathways linking more than 20 art venues across Kochi and surrounding islands.Three Water Metro ferries have been branded to guide visitors between major exhibition spaces, including Aspinwall House, Pepper House, and Island Warehouse. The initiative also features QR codes on board, providing real-time access to venue details, exhibition highlights, and festival information, effectively making the commute part of the cultural journey.

By leveraging the city’s waterways, the Biennale offers a scenic, sustainable alternative to road travel, connecting Fort Kochi’s heritage precinct with mainland exhibition sites. The Fort Kochi terminal additionally hosts the Art By Children (ABC) initiative, encouraging young participants to engage in hands-on workshops and creative exploration.Visitors report that the ferry rides enhance the festival experience, creating a transitional space that blends urban life with art. “The journey across the backwaters provides a calm prelude to the exhibitions,” said one attendee, highlighting how the integration of public transport and art can transform visitor engagement. The collaboration illustrates Kochi’s broader efforts to promote sustainable mobility while supporting cultural tourism. By positioning the Water Metro as a floating extension of the festival, organisers not only facilitate seamless connectivity between scattered venues but also showcase the city’s historic waterways as a practical and scenic infrastructure asset.

Urban mobility experts note that such initiatives can encourage public transport usage, reduce traffic congestion during major events, and highlight the role of water-based transit in sustainable urban planning. For Kochi, combining cultural engagement with functional infrastructure demonstrates a model for other cities looking to integrate heritage, tourism, and transport solutions. The Biennale, running until March 31, 2026, spans over 22 locations across Kochi, with the Water Metro collaboration exemplifying how public transit can enhance visitor experiences while promoting environmentally responsible city travel.
