Kochi Metro Phase II Land Acquisition Gains Momentum

The land acquisition process for Phase II of the Kochi Metro is progressing rapidly, with revenue authorities expediting procedures for the construction of new Metro stations along the proposed Pink Line. A key milestone in this effort is the issuance of a 19(1) notification to acquire 0.1314 hectares of land for the Palarivattom Bypass Metro station, strategically located at the intersection of NH 66 and the Palarivattom-Kakkanad road.

This station is part of the 11.2-km Pink Line that will connect JLN Stadium with Infopark in Kakkanad, featuring 10 stations at Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra, and Infopark.

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) had previously issued notifications for land acquisition for nine of these stations. However, the process faced delays due to land ownership disputes, prompting revenue authorities to extend the validity of the earlier 11(1) notification by six months from October 31. So far, 19(1) notifications have been issued for only two stations—CSEZ and Chittethukara—while the remaining stations await clearance. Despite these challenges, KMRL remains committed to completing construction of the Pink Line within 20 months, followed by four months of system and signalling works. The Pink Line is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity and mobility in the region, linking key residential and commercial areas. The Kochi Metro Phase II project reflects the city’s growing commitment to modern public transport solutions, setting the stage for improved urban infrastructure and sustainability.
