Kochi Metro New Feeder Service Enhances Connectivity for Techie
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has launched a new ‘point-to-point’ feeder bus service connecting Tripunithura metro station to Infopark, aiming to improve last-mile connectivity for tech professionals commuting to the IT hub.
The service, operating six days a week, will have no intermediate stops except at Kakkanad metro station, Infopark Phase 1, and Phase 2. A fixed fare of ₹60 per passenger is set for the air-conditioned buses, which will run during peak hours in the morning and evening. The initiative responds to long-standing demands from commuters and residents for better connectivity between the metro station and Infopark. “We welcome the initiative as a substantial number of techies will be benefited by the planned services connecting Infopark and Tripunithura metro station,” said a representative from Progressive Techies, a socio-cultural organisation of tech professionals based in Kerala’s IT parks.
The Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents’ Association (TRURA) had previously submitted a memorandum to KMRL, highlighting the lack of last-mile connectivity from the Tripunithura Terminal Metro station. “The metro station is the only one not located on a National Highway or PWD stretch. Commuters are facing a last-mile connectivity issue here, as one has to walk a good 700 metres to reach the nearest bus stop,” said an official from TRURA. In addition to the new feeder service, KMRL has been expanding its electric bus fleet. Out of the 15 air-conditioned electric buses acquired, 13 have already been deployed, with two kept as reserves. The e-feeder services have been well-received, with over two lakh commuters availing the facility in nearly two months. The average daily ridership includes 1,350 passengers on the Aluva-Airport route, 730 on the Kalamassery-Medical College route, and 890 on the Infopark route.
KMRL’s initiative aligns with the city’s vision of creating a sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable urban transport system. By integrating metro, water metro, and electric bus services, KMRL aims to provide seamless, comfortable, and affordable connectivity options for commuters, contributing to the development of zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and sustainable cities. As Kochi continues to grow as a major IT hub, such initiatives are crucial in addressing the transportation needs of its residents and professionals, ensuring a balanced and sustainable urban development.
