Kochi has taken a major step toward climate-resilient urban waste management as the state’s first municipal Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant was inaugurated at Brahmapuram. Developed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), the facility marks a turning point in Kerala’s approach to biodegradable waste, offering a blueprint for a circular economy in a rapidly urbanising landscape.
Located in Kochi’s Brahmapuram area, the plant will process 150 tonnes of segregated municipal waste per day. This will yield 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas and 28 tonnes of organic manure daily, repurposing what was once a growing landfill into a renewable energy hub.For years, Brahmapuram’s sprawling 110 acres had been a repository for nearly 350,000 metric tonnes of legacy waste, culminating in a devastating fire in March 2023. That incident prompted a court-mandated overhaul of waste management at the site. The BPCL initiative is a direct response to this crisis, converting an environmental hazard into a clean energy solution.
A senior energy policy expert highlighted that the Kochi plant is part of a nationwide effort under India’s biofuels policy. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is establishing 195 CBG plants across the country, and Kerala will host seven, positioning the state at the forefront of bioenergy innovation.
The plant’s operation depends on meticulous waste segregation. Before being fed into anaerobic digesters, the waste is carefully pre-treated—removing plastics and metals—to ensure efficient biogas production. Once fully functional, the plant will provide a steady supply of renewable fuel, reducing Kochi’s dependence on fossil energy.
This project also offers a social dimension, providing livelihoods in waste collection, biogas production, and organic farming. In a city grappling with legacy waste and rising urbanisation, the Brahmapuram CBG plant signals a tangible shift toward a greener, more circular future—one where municipal waste is no longer a burden but a resource.
