Kochi’s growing reputation as a deep-tech innovation centre gained momentum this week as five teams were declared winners at a national-level Agentic AI hackathon hosted at the city’s Digital Hub in Kalamassery. The competition, organised by Kerala Startup Mission, drew entries from across India and spotlighted autonomous artificial intelligence systems designed to function with minimal human intervention.
Branded as a ‘Build for India’ challenge, the hackathon attracted around 700 applications from 17 states, of which 62 teams were shortlisted to compete in person. Over the course of the event, nearly 250 developers, founders, researchers and students collaborated to build practical AI tools addressing automation, productivity and enterprise efficiency. The five winning teams — Zhacks, Lorial, Lares.AI, Caltek and Team 420 — presented solutions ranging from AI-powered contact centres and digital verification platforms to industrial monitoring systems. While hackathons often focus on prototype development, organisers positioned this initiative as a launchpad for long-term commercialisation.
A senior official at the state startup agency said the emphasis was on Agentic AI — systems capable of autonomous decision-making and task execution. Such tools are increasingly viewed as foundational to next-generation enterprise software, particularly in sectors grappling with labour shortages and cost pressures.Beyond prize money, the winners will receive structured incubation support, mentorship and access to funding networks facilitated by the startup mission. Industry observers note that this post-event scaffolding is critical, as early-stage AI ventures require sustained technical validation, regulatory clarity and capital infusion to scale.Kerala has been steadily investing in digital infrastructure and innovation ecosystems, positioning Kochi as a knowledge economy node alongside its traditional maritime and commercial identity. Analysts suggest that fostering advanced AI capabilities could diversify the state’s economic base and create high-value employment opportunities for engineering graduates.
At a time when global AI development is often concentrated in metropolitan hubs, regional centres such as Kochi are seeking to build distributed innovation networks. By convening talent from multiple states under one roof, the event demonstrated the appetite for collaborative experimentation outside established tech corridors. As India accelerates adoption of automation and AI-driven governance tools, platforms that encourage applied research and startup incubation may play a decisive role in translating technical talent into scalable products. For Kochi, the hackathon signals not just a competitive event concluded, but a deeper ambition to anchor its urban growth in knowledge-led, technology-intensive enterprise.
