Kochi GCDA to Invite PMC Tender Next Week for Ambedkar Sports City Project
Kochi the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is expected to invite tenders for a project management consultancy (PMC) next week for the ambitious Ambedkar Sports City project. A GCDA source indicated that the authority has already prepared a preliminary design for the sports complex, and the selected consultancy will be responsible for finalizing this design, ensuring the vision for the revitalized sports infrastructure moves forward efficiently. This marks a significant step in the development of a major new sports facility for the city.
The GCDA plans to implement the Ambedkar Sports City project primarily through corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. The total estimated cost for the entire project is ₹90 crore. According to GCDA sources, three public sector firms have already been selected to allocate their CSR funds towards this initiative, and discussions are currently ongoing with several other agencies to secure additional funding. This approach aims to leverage private sector contributions for crucial public infrastructure development within the city.
The new sports city is being developed on the site of the existing Ambedkar Stadium, which was located in the city center and had fallen into a dilapidated condition. Approximately two years ago, the executive committee of the GCDA granted approval for the demolition of the old stadium to make way for the modern sports city. The design for the new stadium, a key component of the project, is reported to be almost finalized, promising a significant upgrade to existing sports facilities in the region.
As part of the initial construction work, the GCDA has already completed the demolition of the galleries of the former stadium, a process that cost ₹2 crore. The new Ambedkar Sports City will feature a state-of-the-art football stadium alongside various other sports facilities, including indoor options. In addition to the core sports infrastructure, the project will also include improved lighting, modern toilet facilities, and an exclusive parking area for the new stadium, addressing common concerns at major venues and ensuring convenience for visitors.
The forthcoming invitation for a project management consultancy tender signifies a crucial advancement for the Ambedkar Sports City project. This development aims to provide Kochi with a world-class sports complex, enhancing facilities for athletes and the public while contributing to the city’s overall infrastructure. The use of CSR funds highlights a collaborative model for urban development initiatives.
