Kochi is grappling with severe flooding following continuous heavy rains that have battered the district over the past few days.
The relentless downpour has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and significant damage to infrastructure. In response to the escalating situation, authorities have opened all 15 shutters of the Bhoothathankettu dam to manage the rising water levels in the Periyar and Muvattupuzha rivers. Residents living downstream have been alerted to the potential risks. The tribal hamlets of Kuttampuzha have been cut off due to the submergence of the Manikandalchal causeway, leaving residents stranded. The coastal villages of Chellanam, Nayarambalam, Munambam, and Paravur are experiencing rough seas and tidal waves, leading to coastal erosion.
In Kannamaly, seawater has breached the sand bund at Puthenthodu, flooding the area and causing significant damage to properties. Strong winds have also resulted in the destruction of tiled roofs in several houses. The heavy rains have caused widespread power outages in rural areas, with fallen tree branches snapping power lines. Uprooted trees in areas like Maveli Nagar and Pallikara have blocked roads and disrupted traffic. Additionally, several shops in Piravom have suffered damage due to the adverse weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the district, predicting continued heavy rainfall. In response, the district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Friday to ensure the safety of students and staff.
According to the revenue department, a total of 182 houses have been affected by the heavy rains. Three houses have been completely destroyed, while 179 have suffered partial damage. The district administration has set up 360 relief camps to accommodate residents in case of emergencies. Efforts are ongoing to provide assistance and support to those affected by the floods. As the situation continues to develop, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety advisories issued by local authorities.
