Kochi: The local authorities in Kochi and its suburbs have failed to pass the ‘pre-monsoon test’, as the district experienced significant inundation from recent summer rains.
These rains, which lasted for a few hours, led to severe waterlogging across several areas, raising concerns about potential flooding as the monsoon season approaches at the end of the month. Notably, this is the first instance where not just Kochi city, but the entire district is facing flood-like situations during the summer rains. Thrikkakara municipality was particularly hard-hit, with severe waterlogging reported in many areas, including the Infopark region. Outskirts such as Kizhakkambalam and Pukkattupady also experienced substantial submersion. P. A. Pareethkunju, a resident of Edachira, reported, “Many vehicles parked inside the Infopark campus were damaged in the flooding.”
A critical factor contributing to the widespread waterlogging is the inadequate desilting of drains throughout the municipality. This lack of maintenance has significantly hampered the drainage capacity, leading to rapid accumulation of rainwater. Additionally, the construction of a bund across the Kadambrayar River in Kozhichira to prevent the intrusion of saline water from Champakara Lake has exacerbated the situation by obstructing natural water flow.
The current scenario underscores the urgent need for effective flood management strategies and infrastructure improvements. The local body authorities must prioritise the desilting of drains to enhance water drainage capabilities. Furthermore, a reassessment of structural interventions such as the Kozhichira bund is necessary to ensure they do not inadvertently contribute to flooding. The early inundation serves as a stark warning of the potential challenges the district may face with the impending monsoon. Comprehensive and proactive measures are essential to mitigate the risks of flooding and protect the residents and properties in the affected areas. The local administration must act swiftly to address these infrastructural deficiencies and implement long-term solutions to prevent recurrence of such issues.
