Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has initiated a feasibility study to connect Aluva to Cochin International Airport (CIAL) via the Water Metro, aiming to provide passengers a sustainable alternative to road transport. An internal high-level committee has been tasked with evaluating route viability, boat types, terminal infrastructure, and integration with existing Metro services, with a report expected within a month.
The proposed Aluva-airport route forms part of Phase Two expansion of the Kochi Water Metro, which was launched in April 2023. The first phase connected 38 terminals across 10 island communities with 15 routes, offering residents an eco-friendly transport option across the backwaters. Officials say the Aluva-Nedumbassery link has been prioritised following strong public demand for extending Water Metro services to city outskirts. Experts noted that the service could significantly ease traffic congestion on roads connecting Kochi to CIAL. “Integrating waterways with existing transport modes will not only provide a green alternative but also enhance airport accessibility for residents in surrounding districts,” said a senior official. The distance via the Periyar River is approximately eight kilometres, and the study will examine whether the service should be non-stop or allow intermediate stops.
The feasibility study will also explore connectivity to Aluva Metro Station and the airport terminal, ensuring smooth transfers between road, rail, and water transport. Authorities highlighted that linking the Water Metro with Kochi Metro and planned railway stations at CIAL will position the airport as one of the most comprehensively connected transport hubs in the state, promoting equitable access and reducing the carbon footprint of passenger travel. Phase Two expansion under KMRL and Kerala Water Metro Limited (KWML) is aligned with national directives to explore water-based transport solutions in other major cities. Officials stressed that sustainable transport modes like the Water Metro complement urban planning strategies aimed at creating low-carbon, gender-neutral, and inclusive mobility options while accommodating growing passenger demand.
The integration of the Water Metro with CIAL is expected to increase passenger traffic for both Kochi Metro and the airport while providing a reliable, energy-efficient alternative to private vehicles and buses. Officials added that the service could catalyse further investment in smart ticketing, terminal facilities, and crew training, supporting the city’s broader goals of sustainable urban mobility. With the report due within a month, stakeholders including city planners, transport experts, and environmental analysts will closely monitor recommendations to ensure the project maximises operational efficiency, sustainability, and passenger convenience.
