Kochi: In response to commuters’ demands for a safer distance between ferry terminals, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has announced plans to construct an alternative terminal at Vypeen for the Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) ferries.
This move aims to mitigate the congestion and potential safety hazards caused by the close proximity of the existing terminals. Currently, ferries operated by KMRL and SWTD are berthed in close quarters at Vypeen, a situation that persists despite the 2004 commissioning of the Goshree bridges. The limited berthing space also accommodates a pair of ro-ro ferries operated by the Kochi Corporation, further exacerbating the congestion.
KMRL has expressed its willingness to install floating pontoons at the new terminal, similar to those used at all Water Metro terminals. These pontoons will facilitate safe passenger embarkation and disembarkation, regardless of tidal conditions, thereby enhancing safety and convenience. Premanand, a frequent traveller on the Ernakulam-Vypeen route, highlighted the risks posed by the current setup. He noted that the ferry terminals at Vypeen are alarmingly close to each other in an area near the sea mouth, which is characterised by strong undercurrents. “Commuters and ferry crew cited instances of near misses involving ferries operated by the two agencies. They cited the need for at least 30-m gap between the two terminals, especially since the ro-ro terminal is located a stone’s throw away,” he added.
The introduction of the new terminal is expected to alleviate these concerns by providing a safer and more organised berthing arrangement for SWTD ferries. This development underscores KMRL’s commitment to improving the overall safety and efficiency of ferry operations in the region. By addressing the logistical challenges at Vypeen, KMRL aims to enhance the commuter experience and ensure the continued patronage of ferry services, which remain a vital mode of transportation in Kochi. This initiative is part of broader efforts to optimise the city’s water transport infrastructure, reflecting a proactive approach to urban mobility and public safety.
Seeking a ferry terminal near Goshree Junction which borders the Kalamukku fishing harbour and the fish-vending hub, Francis Chammany, president of Vypeen-Fort Kochi Passengers’ Association, said it would benefit a few thousand more commuters every day. “This would in turn also enable ferry commuters to board buses to any destination from the junction.”
