In a proactive move anticipating the commencement of construction for Kochi Metro Rail Ltd’s (KMRL) Phase II line from the city centre to Kakkanad, the Metro authorities have outlined a comprehensive traffic management plan.
The intensified focus on alternative road development and traffic regulation preparation reflects KMRL’s commitment to minimising disruptions during the upcoming construction phase. A recent meeting, presided over by district collector NSK Umesh, emphasised the necessity of collaborative efforts across various departments and organisations to facilitate smooth construction works. The decision led to the initiation of coordinated efforts by Metro authorities to implement traffic regulations and diversions on alternative roads. KMRL is set to provide detailed information on these measures in the coming days. As part of the preparations, ongoing widening works on the existing road along the proposed route aim to enhance traffic flow. In alignment with the collector’s directive, vehicles, excluding buses, ambulances, autorickshaws, and two-wheelers, are expected to be diverted through alternative routes to alleviate congestion.
To ensure the efficacy of the arrangements, officials responsible will conduct site visits to Metro construction spots for thorough reviews. The proposed Metro line encompasses the construction of 11 stations, with land acquisition processes already completed for seven stations. With construction slated to commence in the coming weeks, KMRL has responded proactively by increasing the frequency of the Water Metro service between Vyttila and Kakkanad. This initiative aims to provide alternative transportation options for residents accessing the Kakkanad region from the city. KMRL’s ambitious timeline targets the completion of Phase II of the Metro line by January of the following year. This strategic approach not only underscores KMRL’s commitment to timely project delivery but also reflects a dedication to minimising inconveniences for commuters during the construction phase As Kochi gears up for an expanded Metro network, the implementation of robust traffic management strategies showcases the proactive stance of KMRL in ensuring a seamless transition throughout the development of Phase II.
