The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has announced plans to initiate manual dredging to clear the silt deposits on the lake’s banks. This decision follows the successful completion of quicklime spraying, a measure aimed at purifying and improving the water quality of the lake.
The quicklime spraying process, which commenced last month, was recommended by experts following a joint inspection by KMDA officials, fisheries scientists, and pollution control board experts. This inspection was prompted by a series of fish deaths in the water body, necessitating immediate action to restore the lake’s ecological balance. “The quicklime spraying using boats has been fully completed,” confirmed a KMDA official. “Next, we plan to undertake manual dredging to further purify the lake.”
The quicklime treatment has already shown positive results, with a noticeable decrease in the number of fish deaths. “Earlier, on average, 15 to 16 fish were dying daily. However, this number has drastically come down,” an official reported. The manual dredging operation aims to remove accumulated silt, which is expected to further enhance the lake’s water quality.
