The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has announced a crucial repair initiative for the Sealdah flyover carriageway, addressing mounting concerns over structural deterioration and safety hazards. This strategic move underscores the authority’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure integrity amidst increasing urban demands and environmental challenges.
The Sealdah flyover, a vital transit artery in Kolkata, has exhibited significant signs of wear and tear. Reports indicate that the monsoon rains have exacerbated the condition of the carriageway, with potholes expanding and surface degradation becoming more pronounced. This deterioration poses not only a potential risk to vehicular safety but also challenges the flyover’s overall functionality.
In response, the KMDA has outlined a comprehensive repair plan. The proposed measures include extensive patchwork to the carriageway surface, targeted pothole repairs, and the removal of invasive plant growth from the flyover’s structural components. The presence of these plants is particularly concerning, as their roots could compromise the flyover’s structural integrity, further intensifying the need for timely intervention. The KMDA has earmarked a budget of ₹4.8 lakh for these urgent repairs and is in the process of engaging a qualified agency to execute the work. The repair activities are slated to commence by the end of this month, reflecting the urgency of the situation and the authority’s proactive stance in mitigating further damage.
Additionally, the KMDA is contemplating a more extensive structural reinforcement of the flyover. However, before these more significant upgrades can proceed, logistical hurdles must be addressed. Notably, hawkers and vendors operating beneath the flyover will need to be temporarily relocated to facilitate the repair work without disruptions. This repair initiative highlights the KMDA’s dedication to ensuring the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure amidst Kolkata’s evolving urban landscape. It also underscores the need for regular maintenance and timely interventions to uphold the safety and functionality of key transport links in the city.
