KMC Implements Free Parking at Gariahat Flyover Amid Agency Transition

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intervened to address ongoing parking challenges beneath the Gariahat flyover by temporarily making the facility free for motorists. This decision comes in response to operational difficulties faced after the previous parking agency relinquished its contract, citing financial inviability.

The Municipal Member in Charge (MMiC), Debashis Kumar, confirmed that the Southeast Traffic Guard, under KMC’s directive, has suspended parking charges until a new agency is appointed through the tender process. “In the interim period, we have instructed police personnel to ensure no parking fees are collected,” stated MMiC Kumar, highlighting KMC’s proactive stance amidst the transitional phase. Issues surrounding unauthorized fee collection and operational mismanagement prompted KMC’s decision to take direct control of the parking facility, accommodating approximately 55-60 vehicles. Concerns were raised over instances of overcharging and unauthorized collections, leading to arrests and subsequent efforts to enhance monitoring and governance. “We are committed to resolving the parking predicament under Gariahat flyover promptly,” remarked a KMC official, emphasizing the need for swift action amid the upcoming festive season, traditionally challenging due to increased traffic and commercial activities. Residents and visitors to Gariahat welcomed the temporary free parking initiative, urging KMC to expedite the appointment of a new agency to ensure sustainable management and accountability. The move underscores KMC’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and consumer convenience, aligning with broader efforts to streamline civic amenities across Kolkata.

Earlier appeals from Kolkata traffic authorities for KMC to expedite the tendering process for parking management contracts at multiple key locations, including Gariahat flyover, Hindustan Park, and Lake Road, highlight the critical need for accountable and transparent parking services. “Increasing accountability and transparency in parking management remains a priority,” affirmed Kolkata police officials, citing recent arrests related to extortion attempts under the Gariahat flyover and neighbouring areas. Collaborative efforts between law enforcement and civic bodies aim to deter illegal practices and safeguard public trust in urban infrastructure management. Looking ahead, KMC is expected to fast-track the appointment of parking attendants and introduce stringent monitoring mechanisms to prevent recurrence of unauthorized fee collections and ensure seamless traffic flow during peak periods.
