KIA’s Terminal 1 Overhaul Set to Boost Capacity by 8 Million Passengers

BENGALURU: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has unveiled plans for a substantial overhaul of Terminal 1 (T1) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), aimed at significantly expanding its operational capacity. The project, scheduled to commence in August 2024, seeks to augment T1’s ability to handle an additional 8 million passengers annually, boosting the airport’s total capacity from the current 52 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 60 MPPA.

A spokesperson from BIAL confirmed that preparatory activities are already underway to facilitate a smooth transition into the main refurbishment phase. Initial steps include the relocation of IT rooms, demolition of west bus boarding gates, and office relocations, paving the way for major construction works slated to begin in early 2025. Emphasising functionality over aesthetics, the refurbishment will focus primarily on modernising outdated systems such as baggage handling, utilities (power, water, sewage), and IT infrastructure. Key enhancements outlined for the initial phase encompass dedicated entry points for passengers without check-in baggage, a silent zone for relaxation, improved accessibility features for persons with reduced mobility (PRM), upgraded VIP lounges, enhanced restroom facilities, and modernised escalators, elevators, and travelators. Additionally, retail and food & beverage zones are set to undergo substantial upgrades aimed at enriching the passenger experience.

The phased implementation strategy aims to minimise operational disruptions while ensuring passenger convenience throughout the refurbishment period. While the bulk of the refurbishment is expected to conclude by the end of 2026, ongoing assessments and gradual deployment of new facilities will prioritise safety and operational efficiency, according to BIAL sources. Terminal 2 (T2), which commenced operations in January 2023 for domestic flights and September 2023 for international flights, currently operates at 45-50% of its total capacity. Phase 2 of T2’s expansion is projected to add a further capacity of 20 MPPA, underscoring KIA’s commitment to meeting growing passenger demands and enhancing its stature as a pivotal aviation hub in South India.
