Construction of the Kharghar Coastal Road, a vital infrastructure project that will link the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) with key urban and business hubs, is expected to commence in early 2026 following the receipt of statutory forest clearances. Planned and executed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the 9.68-kilometre-long, 30-metre-wide arterial corridor is designed to enhance regional mobility between Belapur, Nerul and Kharghar.
Once operational, it is expected to reduce travel time to the airport and catalyse economic activity across Navi Mumbai’s rapidly expanding nodes. A significant feature of the project is its integration with the International Corporate Park (ICP), an upcoming commercial hub modelled after Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The road will also provide improved access to the Kharghar Golf Course and the FIFA-standard Centre of Excellence (COE), positioning Kharghar as a mixed-use district combining business, sports and recreation. The project’s design includes a grade-separated interchange over the Sion–Panvel Expressway to ensure seamless traffic movement, reducing congestion and improving safety. Of the total stretch, 6.96 kilometres will be newly constructed, while the remaining section will be linked to the existing road network.
CIDCO has awarded the construction contract to a joint venture between J Kumar and J M Mhatre. Officials confirmed that the project would play a transformative role in enhancing connectivity to the NMIA and strengthen Kharghar’s urban ecosystem. “Kharghar’s planned layout, open spaces and institutional presence make it an ideal model for sustainable urban expansion. The coastal road will elevate the area’s liveability and economic potential,” said an official. The corridor will also support upcoming developments including the Water Transport Terminal and housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Once completed, the Kharghar Coastal Road will act as a key mobility spine, integrating residential, commercial, and transport infrastructure into a cohesive urban framework.
Experts note that the project aligns with Navi Mumbai’s broader sustainable development strategy, which emphasises balanced growth, multimodal connectivity and reduced vehicular congestion. “The coastal road represents an evolution towards cleaner, more efficient urban transport systems that accommodate both economic growth and environmental considerations,” said a city planner. Construction is expected to conclude by 2029, marking a major milestone in Navi Mumbai’s emergence as a next-generation urban hub connected to one of India’s largest upcoming airports
