Kernex Wins Southern Railways Deal to Install Kavach System

Kernex Microsystems, in collaboration with VRRC, has secured Letters of Acceptance (LoAs) from Southern Railways, Chennai, for two major projects aimed at implementing the Kavach system, India’s indigenous Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). The total contract value stands at ₹311.03 crore, inclusive of GST, with Kernex holding a 60% stake in the consortium.

The first project involves the installation of the Kavach system across the MAS–GDR, MAS–AJJ, and AJJ–RU sections of the Chennai Division, covering a total stretch of 271 kilometers. This part of the contract is valued at ₹173.11 crore and is expected to be completed within 730 days from the date of the LoA. The second project, worth ₹137.92 crore, includes the deployment of the Kavach system along with tower infrastructure and a 48-fiber optic backbone network between Arakkonam (AJJ) and Jolarpettai (JTJ) in the same division. The execution timeline for this project is set at 540 days. These orders reinforce Kernex Microsystems’ growing role in supporting Indian Railways’ push for enhanced safety and technological advancement in railway operations.

The Kavach system, developed by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with Medha Servo Drives, Kernex Microsystems, and HBL Power Systems, has been adopted by the Ministry of Railways as the National ATP system in July 2020. The Kavach system utilizes GPS satellite links, RFID tags, and radio communication to ascertain the location and direction of trains, providing real-time data to loco pilots. This technology aims to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes when necessary, thereby enhancing safety on the tracks. The implementation of Kavach is part of Indian Railways’ broader initiative to modernize its infrastructure and improve safety standards.

The government has allocated substantial funds for the rapid implementation of Kavach across various routes, with plans to cover 34,000 km of track by 2027-2028. Kernex Microsystems’ involvement in these projects underscores its expertise in railway safety technologies and its commitment to supporting Indian Railways in achieving its safety and modernization goals. The company’s role in deploying the Kavach system is expected to contribute significantly to reducing accidents and improving the overall safety of train operations. As Indian Railways continues to invest in advanced safety technologies, the successful implementation of the Kavach system in the Chennai Division will serve as a model for future deployments across the country, paving the way for a safer and more efficient railway network.
