Kerala Sabari Rail Project Gets Green Light After 25 Years

Sabari Rail Project in Kerala is finally set to move forward. The central government has granted approval for the 111.48 km railway line connecting Angamaly to Erumeli, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.

Land acquisition processes are scheduled to commence in July, with a central expert team arriving in Kerala to oversee the proceedings. Originally proposed in the 1997–98 Railway Budget, the Sabari Rail Project has faced numerous hurdles over the years, including funding challenges and land acquisition issues. The recent approval came after a high-level meeting between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi. The project is now prioritized, with both state and central governments committed to its execution.

The railway line is expected to significantly benefit pilgrims traveling to the Sabarimala temple, providing a more accessible and efficient mode of transportation. Additionally, the project aims to boost economic growth in the Ernakulam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta districts by enhancing connectivity and fostering development in these regions. The estimated cost of the project stands at ₹3,421 crore, with the Kerala government agreeing to bear 50% of the expenses. The project will be executed by the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (K-Rail), a joint venture between the state and the Ministry of Railways.

The Sabari Rail Project also holds the distinction of being the first railway line to connect the Idukki district, which has remained isolated from the railway network. This connection is anticipated to open up new avenues for tourism and commerce in the district. The railway line will feature 14 stations, including Angamaly Junction, Kalady, Perumbavoor, Odakkali, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Vazhakulam, Thodupuzha, Karimkunnam, Ramapuram, Bharananganam, Chemmalamattam, Kanjirappally, and Erumeli. These stations are strategically planned to serve both the local population and the influx of pilgrims during the Sabarimala season.

The project’s implementation is expected to alleviate road congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a safer alternative for pilgrims and residents alike. Moreover, the enhanced connectivity is projected to stimulate local economies, create employment opportunities, and promote sustainable development in the region. With the central and state governments aligning their efforts, the Sabari Rail Project is poised to transform Kerala’s transportation landscape, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the state’s populace.
