The Kerala government has expedited the development of airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts. These initiatives aim to enhance accessibility to remote areas, promote tourism, and address infrastructural challenges in the state’s hilly terrains. Kerala’s unique geography, characterized by its narrow width and elongated length, presents challenges in transportation.
With an average width ranging from 70 km to 125 km and a length of 560 km, traditional road and rail networks often face limitations, especially during monsoon seasons. The establishment of airstrips in these districts is seen as a strategic solution to bridge connectivity gaps and provide alternative transportation options. The Kerala government has allocated substantial funds to support these airstrip projects. In the 2025-26 state budget, Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal earmarked ₹1.5 crore for the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and other preliminary activities for the airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod. Additionally, ₹50 crore has been set aside for the development of water aerodrome facilities to support seaplane operations, further enhancing regional connectivity .
To ensure the viability and sustainability of these projects, the Kerala government has engaged RITES-KIIFCON, a joint venture firm, to conduct comprehensive feasibility studies. The district collectors of Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod have been directed to identify suitable land for the airstrips at the earliest. Proposed sites include Periya in Kasaragod, Kalpetta in Wayanad, and a new location in Idukki . The development of these airstrips aligns with the central government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which aims to make air travel affordable and accessible to the masses. Under this scheme, the Kerala government plans to establish heliports, airstrips, and water aerodromes to augment tourism connectivity. The introduction of regional airlines, such as Air Kerala and Al Hind, which have received operational permits and are awaiting Air Operator Certificates, is expected to further bolster air connectivity in the state.
The establishment of airstrips is anticipated to have a multifaceted impact on Kerala’s economy and tourism sector. By providing quicker and more convenient access to remote areas, these airstrips are expected to attract high-net-worth tourists and facilitate the movement of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who prefer air travel for their visits. Moreover, the improved connectivity is likely to stimulate local economies, create employment opportunities, and promote regional development. While the government’s initiatives are commendable, the successful implementation of these projects will require overcoming several challenges, including land acquisition, environmental considerations, and community engagement.
