The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is making significant strides in the development of National Highway 66 (NH66), a crucial artery connecting the northern and southern parts of Kerala.
The project, which spans 644 km from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, aims to transform the state’s transportation landscape by reducing travel time, enhancing road safety, and promoting sustainable mobility. As of early 2025, the widening and modernisation of NH66 is approximately 60% complete. The six-laning initiative is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a national programme aimed at improving road infrastructure across the country. The project is designed to support a maximum speed of 100 km/h, facilitating faster and more efficient travel between key cities.
One of the project’s most notable features is the construction of elevated corridors, such as the 12.75 km Aroor-Thuravoor stretch. These elevated highways are equipped with multiple exit ramps to enhance accessibility while minimising surface-level congestion. However, the implementation of these elevated sections comes with financial implications, as commuters will be required to pay tolls at certain points, including Kumbalam, Eramalloor, and Kalavoor. Despite this, service roads remain a free alternative for users. The NH66 project is not only focused on improving connectivity but also on promoting environmental sustainability. The design of the highway includes measures to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, contributing to the state’s efforts to mitigate climate change. Additionally, the project incorporates solar-powered street lighting and other eco-friendly technologies to minimise its environmental footprint.
In the northern region, the development of a 121 km greenfield expressway between Palakkad and Kozhikode is underway. This new corridor is expected to alleviate congestion on the existing NH966 and provide a faster, more efficient route for travellers. Once completed, the expressway will further enhance connectivity in the state, supporting economic growth and development. Despite the project’s ambitious goals, it faces several challenges, including land acquisition issues and financial constraints faced by contractors. For instance, the 29 km stretch from Kadampattukonam to Kazhakkoottam has experienced delays due to financial difficulties encountered by the contractor, RDS Projects Ltd.
The state government and NHAI are actively addressing these challenges to ensure the timely completion of the project. The revised deadline for the NH66 widening is set for December 2025, with several stretches expected to be completed before March 2025. In conclusion, the NH66 project represents a significant step towards modernising Kerala’s road infrastructure. By enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable practices, and addressing existing challenges, the project aims to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation network for the people of Kerala.
