The Union Government has sanctioned ₹6,700 crore for 14 road development projects in Kerala, marking a significant advancement in the state’s infrastructure initiatives.
This approval follows a high-level meeting in New Delhi between Kerala’s Chief Minister and the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. The projects aim to enhance connectivity, promote economic growth, and align with sustainable development goals. Among the approved projects is the reconstruction of a 380-metre stretch in the Malappuram-Kooriyad section of NH-66, which collapsed during construction. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has mandated the contractor to rebuild this segment as a viaduct at their own expense, estimated at ₹80 crore. Disciplinary actions have been taken against the contractor and associated personnel following an investigation into the collapse .
The Union Minister has assured that the NH-66 project, spanning from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, will be completed by December 2025. This commitment underscores the central government’s dedication to enhancing Kerala’s transportation infrastructure. Additionally, the state is set to receive ₹151 crore under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme to support ongoing projects . Further approvals include the Thiruvananthapuram Outer Ring Road and the Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway, expected by the end of July. These projects are anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion and boost regional connectivity. The Kollam-Senkotta Greenfield (NH 744) project is slated for approval within three months, while the proposed Mysuru-Malappuram Economic Corridor is under detailed study.
In-principle approvals have also been granted for the Willingdon Island-Kundannur Greenfield Corridor and the Azhikkal Port Connectivity Project. The Kothamangalam-Muvattupuzha bypass will be implemented as a single stretch, and the long-pending Punalur bypass project has received the green light, with directives issued for detailed project reports. These developments signify a concerted effort to modernize Kerala’s road infrastructure, with an emphasis on sustainability and equitable growth. The collaborative approach between state and central authorities aims to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards, fostering economic development and improved mobility for the populace.
