Kebang Sole Village Leads the Way in Sustainable Waste Management

the village of Kebang Sole has emerged as a beacon of sustainable waste management. What was once an open dumping ground, plagued by litter and scavenging cattle, has now been transformed into a thriving, eco-friendly vermicomposting unit.

This transformation is a testament to the village’s dedication to adopting sustainable waste management practices and contributes to a cleaner, greener future for the region.
Kebang Sole, selected as one of the 12 villages under Siang district’s “Swachata Hi Seva” initiative, is leading the charge as a “Clean Model Village.” This initiative, which aims to promote cleanliness and sustainable practices across rural India, has witnessed Kebang Sole at the forefront of waste-to-wealth efforts. The Block Mission Management Unit, Pangin unit, and Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission collaborated under the guidance of Circle Officer Niyang Pertin to implement these practices.

The villagers, embracing the principles of waste segregation and recycling, are contributing significantly to their community’s well-being.A significant milestone in this initiative was the establishment of a vermicomposting unit, which now processes waste into nutrient-rich compost. This unit has been handed over to a local self-help group (SHG), creating a sustainable business model where the sale of compost generates revenue for the community. The project aligns with the broader goal of empowering rural women and promoting gender-neutral initiatives by involving local SHGs in the business of waste management.Niyang Pertin, the Circle Officer, also initiated a pilot project in Pangin, training six SHGs on how to manage vermicomposting kits, raw materials, earthworms, and necessary tools.

This pilot programme has proven to be a resounding success, furthering the village’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and waste management while simultaneously boosting local economic opportunities.Kebang Sole village’s shift from a polluted, waste-filled area to a model of sustainability serves as an inspiration to other rural communities across India. The village is not only tackling the challenges of waste management but also paving the way for a circular economy where waste is viewed not as a problem but as a resource. Through their commitment to waste segregation, vermicomposting, and the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, Kebang Sole stands as a shining example of how rural India can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
