Kashmir to Mumbai Cherry Cargo Train Launches June 3

Indian Railways is set to launch the region’s first dedicated cherry cargo train service on June 3.

This initiative aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient transportation solution for the delicate and perishable fruit, enhancing its reach to national markets. The new refrigerated cargo service will operate between Katra in Jammu and Kashmir and Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus. The inaugural run is scheduled to depart from Katra at 21:40 on June 3, with an expected arrival at Bandra Terminus at 10:10 on June 5, covering a distance of approximately 2,035 kilometres in about 36.5 hours. This service is expected to significantly reduce transit time compared to traditional methods.

For decades, the high perishability of cherries necessitated air transport, which, despite its speed, posed financial challenges for small and marginal growers due to high freight costs. The introduction of this rail service offers a more affordable alternative, potentially lowering transportation expenses and improving profit margins for producers. Additionally, rail transport is considered more environmentally sustainable compared to air freight, aligning with broader efforts to reduce carbon footprints in agriculture logistics. The cargo train will be equipped with temperature-controlled wagons to maintain optimal conditions for the cherries during transit. In its initial phase, the service will transport a fully booked parcel van carrying 24 tonnes of cherries. The success of this pilot project could pave the way for regular seasonal services, potentially expanding to other regions and fruits, thereby strengthening the logistics infrastructure for perishable agricultural products in India.

One of the current challenges faced by growers is the requirement for upfront payment for the full 25-ton capacity of a parcel van, regardless of whether the entire capacity is utilised. This policy may pose financial constraints, especially considering the fluctuating daily production volumes of cherries. Discussions are ongoing between growers’ associations and railway authorities to explore more flexible and sustainable freight booking options that accommodate the variable nature of agricultural produce.

The launch of the dedicated cherry cargo train service from Katra to Mumbai marks a significant step towards modernising the transportation of perishable goods in India. By offering a cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to air freight, this initiative holds the potential to transform the logistics landscape for Kashmir’s horticultural sector, benefiting producers and consumers alike.
