A monumental chapter in India’s infrastructure history will unfold as the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, is inaugurated in Jammu and Kashmir.
Standing at an impressive 359 metres above the Chenab River, the bridge surpasses the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres, underscoring India’s engineering prowess. This architectural marvel is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), a project that has been in the making for over four decades. The inauguration will be marked by a ceremonial train journey from the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi district to Katra, traversing the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. This journey symbolises the culmination of a long-awaited dream to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail.
The Chenab Bridge, with its 1.315-kilometre length and 17 spans, has been constructed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and seismic activities. The bridge’s design incorporates advanced engineering techniques, ensuring durability and safety in the challenging terrain of the region. The USBRL project, costing approximately Rs 43,000 crore, aims to enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, and promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Once operational, the railway line will provide an all-weather alternative to the frequently disrupted Jammu-Srinagar highway, facilitating smoother transportation of goods and passengers.
In a strategic move, the Indian Railways has established Jammu as a standalone railway division, enhancing administrative efficiency and governance in the region. This development is expected to streamline operations and improve service delivery for the growing railway network in Jammu and Kashmir. The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge and the commencement of Vande Bharat train services signify a transformative shift in the region’s infrastructure landscape. This milestone not only showcases India’s commitment to modernising its transportation network but also reflects a vision of sustainable and inclusive development, fostering greater integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country.
As the trains begin their journey on June 6, they will not just traverse the newly laid tracks but will also symbolise the bridging of communities, cultures, and opportunities, heralding a new era of connectivity and progress for the Kashmir Valley.
