Kashmir Apple Growers Seek Dedicated Freight Train for Direct Market Access

Vande Bharat Express in the Kashmir Valley, apple growers are now advocating for the establishment of a dedicated freight train service to facilitate direct transportation of their produce to major markets across India. Kashmir’s apple industry, which accounts for nearly 75% of India’s total apple production, is a cornerstone of the region’s economy, supporting over 3.5 million people directly or indirectly.

However, growers have long faced significant logistical challenges due to the absence of a direct freight corridor. The reliance on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for transportation is fraught with issues, including traffic congestion, road closures, and adverse weather conditions, leading to delays and increased costs. The recent rail connectivity improvements, culminating in the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), have reignited hopes among growers for a more efficient transportation system. The USBRL project, which includes the world’s highest railway bridge and India’s longest tunnel, has significantly reduced travel time between Jammu and Srinagar, providing a foundation for the proposed “Apple Express” freight service.

Advocates for the dedicated freight train service argue that it would offer several benefits, including reduced transportation costs, timely delivery, and improved shelf life of apples. By minimizing handling and exposure to adverse conditions, the service could enhance the quality of apples reaching markets in Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond. Furthermore, the introduction of a dedicated freight train aligns with broader goals of sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. Rail transport is more energy-efficient and has a lower carbon footprint compared to road transport, contributing to the creation of zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable cities. While the technical feasibility of such a service has been acknowledged, the key hurdle remains obtaining the necessary approvals from the central government.

Stakeholders are hopeful that the success of the Vande Bharat Express will pave the way for the realization of the “Apple Express,” transforming the logistics landscape for Kashmir’s apple industry. In conclusion, the establishment of a dedicated freight train service for Kashmir’s apples represents a significant step towards modernizing agricultural logistics, reducing post-harvest losses, and enhancing market access. It holds the potential to not only boost the region’s economy but also contribute to the development of sustainable and equitable urban infrastructures.
