Karnataka has stepped up its push for Central approval, urging the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to expedite clearances for the long-pending Kalsa-Bhandura water diversion and other key irrigation projects in the state. In a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi this week, state officials held discussions with Union environment authorities, emphasizing the urgency of clearing roadblocks that have stalled the implementation of the Kalsa-Bhandura and Yettinahole projects.
Officials stressed that these initiatives are critical to addressing water shortages across various districts, especially during the summer months. According to sources, the Yettinahole project is nearing completion, with nearly 70% of the work already done. However, progress on the Kalsa-Bhandura project remains suspended, awaiting forest and environmental clearances. To address concerns raised by the Centre, Karnataka has reportedly submitted details of alternative land parcels provided to the forest department in exchange for project-affected areas.
Officials from the state’s water resources department also met with representatives from the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, requesting additional support for the Upper Bhadra Project, another flagship irrigation scheme aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity. Experts familiar with the discussions noted that the Centre has indicated a willingness to explore solutions. Coordination with legal teams and inter-state consultations are also being undertaken to address pending environmental issues and regulatory concerns.
Officials confirmed that Karnataka will continue to engage with Union ministries and MPs during the ongoing Parliament session to ensure these strategically important projects are not left in limbo. They reiterated that the Centre’s timely action is essential for safeguarding Karnataka’s long-term water security, irrigation potential, and drought mitigation efforts.
