Kanpur Ring Road Project Gains Pace

Kanpur is on the cusp of a significant transformation in its urban infrastructure, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) actively progressing on the ambitious 93-kilometre ring road project designed to encircle the city and streamline its burgeoning traffic flow.

The project, being executed in four distinct packages, has witnessed considerable momentum in three segments, with the finalisation of the tender for the crucial Package 2-A anticipated within the next month. This 8-kilometre stretch, connecting Mandhana-Bithoor to Transganga City, had faced initial setbacks due to technical reasons necessitating a retendering process. However, NHAI officials have indicated that construction work on this vital link will commence immediately upon the tender’s finalisation, marking a significant step towards the project’s overall completion.

The NHAI’s comprehensive plan for the Kanpur Ring Road encompasses a 93.20-kilometre bypass designed to alleviate traffic congestion within the city and improve connectivity to its surrounding regions. Package one of the project involves the construction of the road from Sachendi to Maharajpur, while package four focuses on the stretch from Jarkala to Pakri, strategically traversing the Defence Corridor. Significant progress is also underway on package two-B, which entails the construction of a 19-kilometre section connecting Transganga City to the Lucknow Expressway via Unnao-Shuklaganj. These parallel construction efforts across multiple packages underscore the NHAI’s commitment to expediting this critical infrastructure development.

The delayed but now nearing finalisation of the tender for Package 2-A is particularly significant as it will establish a vital link between the Mandhana-Bithoor area and Transganga City, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people across this key corridor. A substantial budget of ₹972 crore has been allocated for the construction of this 8-kilometre stretch, with an additional ₹98 crore 54 lakh earmarked by NHAI for land acquisition. The initial tender for this package was floated in February but had to be cancelled due to technical flaws, causing a temporary setback. However, the swift commencement of the retendering process in March, now nearing its conclusion, demonstrates the NHAI’s resolve to keep the project on track.

To facilitate the construction of the entire ring road, NHAI has successfully acquired a significant 700 hectares of land. The tendering process for Package Two A was initiated following the completion of its land acquisition phase, highlighting the sequential planning involved in such large-scale infrastructure projects. The central government has committed a substantial budget of ₹40 billion 77 crore for the overall construction of the Kanpur Ring Road, underscoring the project’s strategic importance for the region’s economic development and connectivity. NHAI engineers have expressed confidence that the entire ring road project will be completed by the year 2027, promising a significant upgrade to Kanpur’s transportation infrastructure.

According to Pankaj Yadav, Project Director at NHAI, construction work is proceeding at a rapid pace across the three other packages of the ring road, and the retendering process for package two-A is in its final stages. He reiterated the target of commencing construction on this remaining package within a month, reinforcing the NHAI’s commitment to the timely completion of the entire ring road project. The successful and timely completion of the Kanpur Ring Road is expected to have a transformative impact on the city, easing traffic congestion, improving logistics, and fostering greater connectivity with surrounding areas, thereby contributing to a more efficient and sustainable urban ecosystem.
