Kanpur Metro Successfully Completes Test Run from Motijheel to Central Station

Kanpur Metro took a significant step forward on December 19, 2024, with the successful completion of a test run from Motijheel to Kanpur Central station. This trial, conducted on both the up-line and down-line tracks, marks an important milestone in the preparations for extending passenger services on the metro network. The extension, which will connect IIT to Kanpur Central, is slated to launch in January 2025.

The successful test run demonstrates that work on the route, including the development of underground stations, is progressing swiftly. Senior Metro officials were present to oversee the trial, which is a precursor to regular trials that will begin soon, as work at the stations is quickly advancing. This trial also marks a historic moment for Kanpur Metro, as it will soon ferry passengers to its underground stations for the first time. Earlier this year, in July and October, test runs were conducted on the up-line and down-line tracks, extending to the Nayaganj underground station. With all essential infrastructure—such as tracks, third rail systems, and signals—installed, the metro train successfully made its way to Kanpur Central station. During the test, various systems including the tracks and power supply were tested to ensure operational readiness. The third rail installed parallel to the tracks was also charged for the first time up to the Central Station, marking a crucial step in the metro’s development.

Currently, Kanpur Metro operates on the elevated viaduct section of the Priority Corridor from IIT to Motijheel, which features nine elevated stations. The upcoming extension to Kanpur Central will add five more stations—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central itself—which will all be underground. With this extension, the Kanpur Metro network will not only expand but also provide faster, more efficient travel options for commuters, contributing to improved urban mobility in the region. The completion of this project will be a major achievement for the city as it moves closer to modern public transport solutions.
