Kanpur’s urban mobility network is advancing significantly as the Metro Rail Project’s Corridor-1 progresses into its third phase, focusing on extending services to Naubasta. A critical component of this expansion involves the swift installation of 23 escalators and 26 lifts across seven key stations, enhancing accessibility and efficiency for commuters. This strategic infrastructure development, featuring indigenously manufactured, eco-friendly systems, underscores Kanpur’s commitment to fostering a sustainable, equitable, and modern public transport system for its rapidly growing population.
The Kanpur Metro Rail Project’s Corridor-1, already extended from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central in two phases, is now laying the groundwork for its final stretch towards Naubasta. This crucial third phase targets seven stations along the route, including Jhakarkati, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Basant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta. The rapid progress in installing vertical transport systems at these stations is a testament to the meticulous planning and determination of the project team, ensuring that civil construction and system installations proceed in parallel to optimise timeframes and expedite operational readiness.
A notable aspect of this expansion is the strong emphasis on the ‘Make in India’ initiative. All lifts and escalators being integrated into the Kanpur Metro project are domestically manufactured in Chennai, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in producing high-quality urban transit components. This not only supports local industry but also ensures greater control over supply chains and maintenance. Furthermore, these systems are designed with eco-friendliness at their core; lifts incorporate regenerative braking technology for energy conservation, while smart escalators automatically pause when not in use, significantly reducing the system’s overall energy footprint and contributing to the city’s zero net carbon ambitions.
The installation of 23 escalators and 26 lifts across these stations is poised to dramatically enhance passenger convenience and accessibility. Underground stations like Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar will each be equipped with three lifts and four escalators, while the five elevated stations will feature four lifts and three escalators. This comprehensive provision ensures seamless movement from street level to concourse and then to platforms, making the Metro system highly gender-neutral and accessible for all commuters, including those with restricted mobility. Load testing is being conducted concurrently with installation to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Beyond efficiency, safety remains a paramount concern. Each escalator is fitted with three emergency stop buttons, allowing for immediate shutdown in critical situations. Additionally, automatic announcements on escalators will prompt passengers to hold handrails, reinforcing safety protocols. This holistic approach to infrastructure development, combining local manufacturing, environmental sustainability, and enhanced accessibility, positions Kanpur Metro as a model for future urban transportation projects.
