Kanpur Development Authority Focuses on Infrastructure for New Kanpur City Project
The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) is accelerating its efforts to bring the long-awaited New Kanpur City project to life, placing a heavy emphasis on infrastructure development. This initiative, which was originally conceptualised in 1996, has faced several delays but is now seeing significant progress, particularly in the development of crucial infrastructure that will support the city’s expansion.
The New Kanpur City project, once completed, is set to transform the city into a modern urban hub with state-of-the-art infrastructure to support its growing population and economy. To achieve this, KDA has initiated an extensive preparation phase, which includes finalising the site plan for the project based on acquired land and a thorough study of its topography. This planning phase is key to identifying the precise locations for land development, as well as determining the necessary infrastructure upgrades needed to turn the vision into reality. One of the primary components of the infrastructure work involves the development of roads, sewerage systems, and drinking water pipelines. Roads will form the backbone of connectivity across the new city, ensuring seamless travel within the expanded urban area. The sewerage systems will address waste management needs, while the drinking water pipelines are vital for ensuring that the residents have access to clean and reliable water supply.
KDA has already allocated a budget of Rs 183.5 crore for the initial phase of this infrastructural development. The goal is to complete essential road networks and utility services that will form the foundation for future urbanisation and make the area more conducive to residential and commercial development. The development of these infrastructures is critical to laying the groundwork for the entire city’s growth, with a focus on sustainable urban planning. The project is being implemented in phases, with the first phase covering 53.31 hectares of land, including villages such as Sambalpur, Gangapur, Chakbada, Singhpur Kachar, Hindupur, and Bairi Akbarpur. KDA has already acquired approximately 45 hectares of land, and village farmers have agreed to provide an additional 5 hectares, bringing the total land available for this phase to 50 hectares. The remaining 39.69 hectares are in the process of being acquired, and land acquisition will commence as soon as state government approval is obtained, which is expected next month.
Despite challenges in land acquisition and maintaining clear land titles, KDA has been proactive in addressing encroachments on its land. In a recent development, KDA successfully recovered approximately 70 bigha of illegally occupied land in Sanigawan village, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding the project’s integrity. This effort will ensure that the land intended for the New Kanpur City project remains free from illegal occupancy, allowing for uninterrupted development. As the project progresses, KDA is also conducting thorough verification of other land holdings across different residential schemes in the area. This ongoing verification aims to prevent future encroachments and identify any irregularities in land use that could hinder the successful execution of the project. The focus is on ensuring that all land used for the New Kanpur City project is properly documented and safeguarded against illegal activities. Once completed, the infrastructure developed under the New Kanpur City project will not only enhance the quality of life for its future residents but will also serve as a model for sustainable urban growth in the region. KDA’s commitment to infrastructure development is an essential step in making the dream of New Kanpur City a reality and setting the stage for a more modern and efficient urban landscape.
